Description
Remapping can be a potential minefield, please take time to read this section thoroughly for your own benefit. It is long but worth it. Please call us with any questions you may have.

Crest has been offering true quality software upgrades both on - site and on a mobile basis longer than the majority other tuning firms. Our maps are mostly developed in house, or by the best engineers in the business on our behalf as required, they and not simply purchased "ready to plug and play" from a software "supermarket" as many other tuners tend to.

OVERVIEW
We offer both on-track custom "live" mapping (the ultimate form of mapping, please see more info further down this listing as well as separate listing further down the webpage) as well as the usual standard form of reprogramming commonly known as "remapping" or "chipping".

This section you are reading now deals with this latter form of standard remapping, again see separate section further down fro live mapping.

A well engineered remap will normally give you better economy AND more power. However, we can configure the maps to your choice to give more power than economy gains (as with most other companies) OR we can configure for more economy than power gains (eg. taxi cabs, vehicles used for long distance etc).

We can tailor our maps to give customised effects and benefits to your requirements (within the limits of physics of
course) in varying degrees including but not limited to :

- greater fuel economy (up to 8%)
- lower emissions
- more power and / or torque at higher or lower revs to suit you
- more response in certain conditions
- performance more suited to extreme environmental conditions ( very hot ot very cold countries)
- different types of throttle response
- sheer brute power / torque gains
- any combination of the above factors

Our Philosophy here is simple...NO GAIN / POSITIVE EFFECT, NO CHARGE, NO QUESTIONS. ( Assuming the car is in proper working order in the first place of course).WE ARE MORE THAN HAPPY TO MAP YOUR CAR AT AN INDEPENDANT DYNO OF YOUR CHOICE SO YOU CAN SEE FIRST HAND "THE BEFORE AND AFTER" EFFECTS.

HOW WE DO IT
Benefits are gained by ‘ironing out’ the compromises that are purposefully engineered into the car’s management system programme by the manufacturer (to allow for all extreme variations of weather, petrol grade, general atmospheric conditions in different parts of the world, as well as to allow longer intervals between engine services), and further enhancing the fueling, ignition and other parameters, thus attaining genuine increases in smoothness,driveability, throttle response, power and torque. The engine's "flat spots" (usually two) that are purposefully engineered into the power curve at the factory (so as to pass emission and noise regulations at those particular RPM locations) are also eliminated.

As well as adjusting the usual fuel/air/ignition/boost parameters we also (where appropriate) remap the Vanos system (many tuners do not, or do not know how), the acceleration/ throttle transition maps, knock sensor parameters, remove the top speed limiter and quite a bit more. We can also tailor our software maps to suit most engine modifications such as intakes, sport cams, de-catalised exhaust systems etc without putting your car onto a dyno (see further note on dyno use below).

We offer the following options for the actual remap process:
1. POST / COURIER: You send us your ECU and we return it mapped ready to plug -and - play, typical turnaround 3 - 5 days.
2. VISIT US: come to our or our agents' premises, by appointment, typical turnaround 2-3hrs.
3.REMOTE C - FLASH: We send you a special cable to connect between your laptop and the car's OBD port, and we map your ECU remotely (email or Ethernet) and at your convenience.
4. MOBILE: we come to your location at a time to suit you, carry out the remap and wait for you to test drive before we leave.

SAFETY & BMW WARRANTY
The new software can easily be reverted back to the factory map at any time.

A remap is usually "invisible" to your BMW dealer.

This form of tuning is perfectly safe for your car’s engine as long as it is serviced regularly (we recommend at least every 7000 mls on high perf/spec vehicles) and uses the best grade fuel available.

LEVELS / STAGES OF REMAPPING
We offer three Options of remapping to suit varying budgets and requirements :

OPTION 1 - STANDARD REMAP FOR OEM. The most common and least expensive format, these maps have previously been specifically formulated on dyno and road for the specific vehicle model in question. We then convert the data as required to “fit” your particular version ECU/DME and upload the new programme. The prices and link to power gains at bottom of this page all refer to this Standard option remap.

OPTION 2 - TUNED OEM. This is similar to option 1 above, but with adjustments made to the programme to account for mild to medium engine tuning modifications such as de- cat pipes, intakes, sport cams etc. Depending on the car and modifications this format may sometimes cost between 10 – 20 % more than the Option 1 standard maps, but quite often it is the same price, please enquire if interested.

OPTION 3 - ON ROAD / TRACK EMULATED "LIVE" MAPPING. This is the ultimate and most effective form of mapping (in our and many top tuners' experience),and is employed by and for all high end and Professional Motorsport applications such as Rally, Formula 1, Indycar, high end custom builds, etc. Companies who regulary employ such live road mapping techniques include Mclaren, G - Power, Mossleman turbo, Bugatti etc.

IMPORTANT ! NOTES & MYTHBUSTING ( PLEASE READ!):

1.LIVE MAPPING
We do NOT offer the kind of "Live Mapping " service that involves only a laptop connected to your car's OBD port and taking a quick drive down the road, because no such process is possible! DO NOT get duped..... Firstly an OBD port cannot transfer data at a fast enough rate for a live map, and the fact the tuner has to stop the car, remotely amend the programme and then re load it onto the ECU means it is no longer a live map. The ONLY way to correctly "live map " is as described in “Option 3 “ above.

2. POWER GAINS / CLAIMS
Have you noticed our stated power increases are generally less than claimed by many other companies? This is because we are telling THE TRUTH ! No BS no exaggerations. If you really could, for example remap an E46 M3 to achieve + 35 or so bhp then in all likeleyhood the car would not run correctly in the first place from the factory! Think about this for a moment...there is really only ONE perfect Stoimetric air/fuel ratio and by definition only ONE optimal fuel/ignition map for any car (all else being equal and whilst remaining within generally accepted limits of engine safety, longevety and reliability) so if all"chip tuners" are doing their job correctly how can one tuner claim, say 15 bhp more than another for exactly the same model vehicle? Oh...and also charge you 2 or 3 times the amount we do? Defies logic does it not ?

FUEL ECONOMY
In most cases, whichever type of remap option you choose, you will notice an increase in fuel economy during normal driving, anything from 4 - 8%.

3.COSTS & WARRANTY
You may have noticed certain companies charge almost twice as much as we do (sometimes more) for Standard remaps (as described for remap Option 1 above). What is the justification for this? Are they offering twice the power or anything different to other companies? Of course not (see myth buster No 2 above), it is marketing and nothing else. Some of these companies claim they are more expensive because they offer a full waranty against engine damage as result of their remap; well three things to consider here : a). ask them to provide you a copy of the policy and it's terms, chances are they will/can not. If they do, reading the small print usually reveals all they do is revert the ECU back to factory standard then simply administer the normal BMW waranty procedure on your behalf ! b).It would be almost impossible to directly attribute any kind of engine damage to a remap, for a start only the remap originator himself can usually "read" the tuned file to see what changes have actually been made and if they would be relevant to a claim. c). As long as the remap has been correctly configured and developed in the first place there is no risk whatsoever of engine damage, not least because of all the safety fields and cut - outs incorporated into all management systems.

4.BMW "M" CARS AND OTHER PERFORMANCE MODELS
Despite what others may tell you, it is not unusual to get a proportionally lower power gain from remapping a performance variant of a model ( eg BMW M models or Mercedes AMG models) than from a "normal" model, reason being that the manufacturers themselves will have already mapped the car more "aggressively" from the factory, thereby leaveing less margin for furthe increases. This is not always the case, but worth noting.

5.DYNOS

Like any good tuner Crest uses dynos for some development and other tuning work of course, but we use one of two completelyindependent dyno companies so there is never any doubt of the results.

WE ARE ALSO MORE THAN HAPPY TO MAP YOUR CAR AT A DYNO LOCATION OF YOUR CHOICE SO YOU CAN SEE FIRST HAND "THE BEFORE AND AFTER" EFFECTS. NO GAIN NO FEE, SIMPLE AS THAT ( assuming no pre existing faults with the car of course that would affect matters).

6.DEALER REFLASHES AT SERVICE TIME
A dealer can ALWAYS overwrite an updated BMW factory map onto your ECU / DME (this is often part of the routine service schedule). If we have remapped your car then our map will be LOST if a dealer does this. It is NOT POSSIBLE to "embed " or "scramble" any remaps in such a way that the dealer cannot overwrite it. The answer is simple here ..ask the service manager discreetly NOT to download any new info onto your car ! If your car is more than 3 years old then chances are you already have the latest version BMW software so the dealer will not do a new downlaod anyway.

7.VANOS AND OTHER VARIABLE CAM TIMING SYSTEMS

As detailed previously, some cars benefit from adjustments to the variable cam timing settings and in allowing these settings to act beyond say 7000 rpm ( whereas most oem maps close off vanos action/progression at this point). However this is NOT the same effect as fitting sport cams with higher duration and lift, nor anywhere near it, as some tuners will claim! Vanos affects cam overlap timing parameters ONLY and not lift or duration,consequently these alterations normally affect smoothness and emissions more than absolute power gains. Don't get duped on this point either !

8. CONDITION OF VEHICLE
When remapping your vehicle we assume that it is mechanically sound and with latest BMW factory software installed, extra charges my be required if not.

This type of "live" mapping is considered by many top tuners and race teams to be the ultimate and most effective form, and is employed by all high end and Professional Motorsport applications such as Rally, Formula 1, Indy car, high end custom builds and Special Project divisions, etc.

This form of mapping is ideally suited to :

- custom hi power engine builds
- forced induction conversions

IMPLEMENTAION & DETAILS
The ONLY way to live map is to solder special sockets inside the DME/ECU board and connect a device called an Emulator between the DME and laptop, then a good Air - Fuel Ratio gauge to the exhaust and/or manifold,and plugging in a good diagnostic software tool to the OBD port (such as INPA), all expensive hi – tech items. It IS NOT possible to do any kind of live map by plugging a laptop alone into the OBD port, period.

In basic terms the emulator replicates what the DME is doing, in real time onto our laptop whilst we are driving (usually on a track, such as our fully equipped facilities at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground), allowing us to accurately monitor and instantly adjust all parameters (fuel, ignition advance, vanos control, knock sensoring, safety fields, temp. control etc) whilst driving at all loads, all throttle openings, all revs, under real world conditions, until the optimal map for your car and your requirements is achieved. In essence the laptop becomes the car’s instantly adjustable DME/ECU for the duration of the process. Any changes that are made to the car’s programme take effect and can be felt and measured immediately.

Live road mapping tends to gives the best drivability characteristics possible, as after all you mapping the car in real time during "real world" use and on a real road. This allows the most accurate, effective, powerful and truly custom one – off map possible for each individual car, configured to it’s individual environment and climate, suited to the owner’s individual driving style and fully tested to the maximum on a speed limit-free track.

In the UK we normally carry out these mapping sessions at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground, near Leicester, but we also travel anywhere in the world as required by the customer.

Dynos are rarely used by us for this process... although they have their uses in initial set up procedures and attaining comparative power figures,a dyno is not always as accurate as many believe, and most importantly perhaps, can never fully replicate real world air flow, climatic and momentary load conditions etc, all of which are very crucial factors. There can also sometimes be a tendency for a dyno- only tuned car to display a "stepped" feeling in power incease as revs rise, rather than a steady seamless progression. Force inducted cars in particular should ALWAYS be live mapped, at least in the final stages, as the fuel/air mixture very often shows up as too rich on a dyno (lack of real world air flow); if the mixture is consequently leaned out too far this can possibly cause engine damage when the car is back to driving on the road. Another point to keep in mind is that is getting more and more difficult to get accurate and meaningful dyno data for modern cars due to their sophisticated electronic systems interfering with the dyno operation and readings.

(NOTE: The above statements are in no way meant to denigrate the many good companies out there that use dynos extensively for tuning nor the good work they achieve.We are merely stating our preferred method of live mapping based on our and our engineers' many years of high- end experience).

COSTS & GUARANTEE
Live mapping can cost anywhere from £1400 to £2100 including track hire fees and we normally only suggest this method for force inducted engines or highly modified cars, one- off engines or for the discerning owner with a car in a relatively normal state of tune who simply wants the very best and does not mind paying a bit extra for it.

Description
Similar in principle to the renowned Racelogic system feature, allowing you to execute quicker standing starts, but controlled exclusively through the factory ECU without need for any other electronics or sensors.

With Launch Control you apply full throttle with the clutch depressed, but the engine holds at a pre set optimum rev point ( for example 4800 rpm on an E46 M3); you can then side step the clutch pedal as fast as you desire and the new programme will then feed power to the back wheels progressively so as to keep wheelspin at below 10%, generally considered to the optimum for the fastest possible take off.

This item is available seperately or in conjunction with a remap and / or other listed software upgrades, in which case the combined cost would be discounted.
